Albuquerque Pradaxa Lawsuit – Ron Bell Injury Lawyers

Patients who have experienced severe internal bleeding after taking Pradaxa, along with the surviving family members of those who have died due to complications caused by this drug, can still file individual lawsuits against the manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim. Our law firm is experienced in litigation against irresponsible big pharma companies. Our bad drug lawyers are prepared to take on new cases related to Pradaxa injuries and wrongful deaths.
What Is the Drug Pradaxa?
Pradaxa is an anticoagulant drug developed and manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim. Like other anticoagulants or blood-thinners, it is used to prevent strokes in patients suffering from atrial fibrillation. It can be also used to treat deep vein thrombosis or formation of blood clots in veins.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug in 2010. The next year, Boehringer Ingelheim spent $464 million on aggressive, direct-to-consumer advertising and other marketing strategies, promoting the drug as a safer alternative to other blood-thinners. Promotional documents maintained that the drug was so safe that it didn’t require blood tests or a series of consultations with a doctor to adjust the correct dosage.
Failure to Warn of Risks
Boehringer Ingelheim failed to disclose and adequately warn against extremely serious risks associated with Pradaxa use. Like other anticoagulants, Pradaxa can cause severe internal hemorrhages such as gastrointestinal, rectal and brain bleeding. Such bleeding can be fatal and in many cases has been. In fact, Pradaxa proved to be even more dangerous than other blood-thinning agents due to the fact that up until October 2015, no antidote that could reverse the bleeding caused by Pradaxa had existed on the market.
Lawsuits Against Boehringer Ingelheim
The adverse side effects of Pradaxa have affected thousands of patients. Victims have filed lawsuits against Boehringer Ingelheim, accusing the manufacturer of deceptive marketing and failure to disclose risks and misinformation. Individual lawsuits were combined into a multidistrict litigation (MDL). In May 2014, Boehringer Ingelheim decided to settle and agreed to pay out a total of $650 million in compensation to the plaintiffs. Nevertheless, the company claimed no wrongdoing; instead, in an official statement its representatives stressed that they continued to “stand resolutely behind Pradaxa and believed from the outset that the plaintiffs’ claims lacked any merit”.
