What Is the Drug Pradaxa?
Pradaxa is an anticoagulant drug developed and manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim. Like other anticoagulants or blood-thinners, it is used to prevent strokes in patients suffering from atrial fibrillation. It can be also used to treat deep vein thrombosis or formation of blood clots in veins.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug in 2010. The next year, Boehringer Ingelheim spent $464 million on aggressive, direct-to-consumer advertising and other marketing strategies, promoting the drug as a safer alternative to other blood-thinners. Promotional documents maintained that the drug was so safe that it didn’t require blood tests or a series of consultations with a doctor to adjust the correct dosage.
