Taxotere Drug Lawsuits

Taxotere is a chemotherapy drug manufactured by three pharmaceutical companies – Sanofi S.A., Aventis Pharma S.A., Sanofi-Aventis U.S. LLC. Taxotere is one of the most popular drugs of its kind in the United States and around the world, prescribed in the treatment of various types of cancer. It is often used to treat breast cancer – a condition that, in the U.S. alone, affects around 300,000 women every year. However, the drug’s manufacturers are now facing more than 8,000 lawsuits related to Taxotere serious side effects. The lawsuits allege that the drug causes permanent hair loss and that its manufacturers failed to disclose and adequately warn patients about this risk.

Taxotere Causes Alopecia

Permanent hair loss caused by Taxotere, also known as alopecia and it affects both the hair on the head and also all over the body – including eyebrows, eyelashes, and pubic hair. While many chemotherapy drugs used to treat cancer may cause temporary hair loss, in most cases the effects last for only three to six months after the treatment is finished. Hair loss caused by Taxotere, on the other hand, has been reported to be permanent and irreversible. At least two independent studies have shown that the drug may have this effect. According to one of them, alopecia affects 9.2% of all patients who take Taxotere.

Permanent hair loss can be particularly upsetting for women. Because alopecia may be considered a disfiguring condition, women who have suffered irreversible baldness may experience a feeling of physical and emotional loss that can negatively affect other areas of their life. For example, some women may suffer from psychological damage which, in turn, limits their ability to work, causing financial strain. The loss of enjoyment of life can be claimed as well.

Accusations Against Taxotere’s Manufacturers

Plaintiffs in the current MDL related to Taxotere accuse Sanofi and the drug’s other manufacturers of various counts of misconduct such as:

  • selling the drug without disclosing its risks,
  • misleading marketing, and
  • downplaying the dangers associated with the use of Taxotere.

Evidence does seem to show that Sanofi has known about the unusually high rate of alopecia in patients taking Taxotere but failed to disclose this to the American public and medical community by providing adequate, clear warnings of the risk involved.

Currently, no settlement has been reached in relation to Taxotere lawsuits. While the individual lawsuits have been combined into an MDL, the proceedings haven’t reached the trial stage yet. The first four bellwether trials have been scheduled for early 2019.
