Child Left Brain Damaged After Fall at Summer Camp
A New Mexico parent alleges her son was bullied so intensely, he now has a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and brain damage. Allegedly a TBI was caused at a New Mexico summer program, and the City of Santa Fe and its summer camp staff didn’t do enough to protect the 5-year-old boy. The New Mexico TBI lawsuit outlines brain injuries the mother in this case says became progressively worse in a short amount of time. She alleges it began when her son was pushed off a slide in 2012. The lawsuit was filed against the City of Santa Fe, the city-run Monica Roybal Youth Center, and Christus St. Vincent Hospital.
The civil lawsuit petition stated the bully pushed the 5-year-old off a slide at the youth center, and he immediately lost consciousness, and was placed on a bench where he “fell asleep.” No medical attention was provided to the child according to the record, and no parent or emergency contact was called when the child injury occurred. The boys grandmother picked up the child at the end of the day, and states staff told her the child “was sleepy and wanted to take a nap,” and still no mention was made of the fall.
The boys mother claimed she noticed a bump on his head when he arrived home and took him to the Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe. She stated the hospital diagnosed a concussion, sent him home, and told her to give her son over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol. However, the 5-year-old upon arriving home later that evening, had a massive seizure, and was air-lifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital where he had two surgeries to remove large amounts of fluid in the brain. After the seizure the child lost the ability to speak and lost sight in one eye. According to the lawsuit, “his demeanor and personality have suffered marked changes for the worse.”
