Lawsuits Against Manufacturers
A series of lawsuits have been filed against four manufacturers of the most popular PPI drugs: AstraZeneca, Proctor & Gamble, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, and Pfizer after evidence was found that shows these companies have known for years about the risk of damage and injury associated with their drugs but had failed to disclose it and adequately warn the public. The current number of lawsuits reached has surpassed 4,200. They have been combined into a multidistrict litigation (MDL) in New Jersey. No trials have started yet as many more plaintiffs join the MDL every month.
Prior to these lawsuits, companies manufacturing PPIs had already been targeted with lawsuits claiming other counts of misconduct. For example, a lawsuit against Takeda Pharmaceuticals was based on allegations that the company failed to disclose that their PPI medicine Prevacid greatly increased the risk of bone fractures. This case settled for an undisclosed amount. Another lawsuit brought by the U.S. government against Pfizer alleged that the manufacturer had promoted the PPI drug Protonix for unapproved uses. In this lawsuit, Pfizer agreed to settle for $55 million.
